Liza

Bird On A Wing, Liza’s first solo release, marks a new beginning for one of Boulder, Colorado’s most admired talents. “This is the first time in my career as a singer/songwriter,” says Liza, “where I made every choice for the production from start to finish. This album process was humbling because I struggled to get it across the finish line in a reasonable amount of time.  It was a huge learning process.”

Liza first gained national attention in 1991 as the singer, lead guitarist and songwriter for the band Zuba.  Liza’s fierce lead guitar work, seductive vocals, and passionate songwriting helped Zuba gain a loyal national following, releasing four self-produced albums in 8 years and landing singles on the soundtracks of several motion pictures, most notably Kingpin and There’s Something About Mary.

But the Zuba years came to an end in 1999, when Liza and the other members of the band were ready to go in different musical and life directions. “I wanted to make music that was less about getting a crowd to dance, and more about emotions and the ups and downs of life.”

Bird On A Wing is that album. Filled with the same compelling intensity that led Zuba to have a cult fan base all over the US, Liza’s songs now have an artistic maturity and a deep emotional resonance. The songs speak about love, loss and human complexity. “I went through major life changes all in one weekend, from losing my home, ending a relationship, and ending the band, which was my identity for so long. It was a traumatic time. That’s when I began to notice that, up until that point, I had been trying to outwardly project that I had it all together.  With Zuba, for years I had explored a very confident persona.  I found my power fronting a powerful rock band.  But with this seismic shift in my life I was ready to be more vulnerable and show that I wasn’t feeling powerful or confident.  I was honestly grieving and felt small, like somewhere along the way I had failed.  How could I not feel that way when every major foundational piece of my life was falling like a house of cards?  But, if you sink into those feelings as a songwriter, without fear, that is where the most precious moments can reveal themselves.”
